The List

Directed by  Burt Kennedy

Written by Michael Pillar

Synopsis: The show opens with AJ, drinking like he means it. The bartender asks for his story, which he procedes to tell  with wonder and sorrow:

A beautiful  woman appears out of the fog at AJ's door in the middle of the night. Her name is Amanda, and she asks for help - she's about to be accused of a murder she didn't commit. AJ's smitten and instantly wants to help.

Rick is wary of  Amanda's unwillingness to explain why she won't go to the police. Against  his better judgment, he can see AJ is determined to help her, and agrees to take the case.

The murder victim is a sleazy publisher who once a year prints a top ten list of the  sexiest women in San Diego. Amanda was photographed secretly and told after the fact that she'd be on the list. She desperately didn't want the  publicity, which sets off Rick's internal alarms even more. AJ won't heed his brother, though, and the Simons are on the trail to find out who  really killed the publisher.

They go to Janet for help, but it turns out she is also on the list and has disqualified herself from the case. She gets the inevitable ribbing from the guys, but they respect her inability to help.

Time passes, and AJ falls head over heels for Amanda. Rick can't keep his misgivings to  himself when he realizes the couple are "playing house". The brothers almost come to blows, only prevented by Rick's ability to back down.  Though he mistrusts Amanda to his core, he is unwilling to let AJ go it alone.

The Simons discover that the publisher and a photograher were killed to keep them from publishing a scandalous but true article about the lesbian affair of  the wife of a prominent citizen. Once they discover this, they become targets themselves and just barely escape becoming the next victims. They chase the husband, who's the murderer, but he loses control of his sports car and goes over a cliff to his death.

After the  accident, the brothers go to the police station to report what they found  and clear Amanda.

There they discover that Amanda was in the witness protection progranm as a witness to mob murder, and she has already been moved again.AJ swears to find her,  but Rick reminds him that if he finds her, so will the mobsters.

AJ races home  to find only a note, filled with a fond farewell. Knowing he can never  again see the woman he loves, he slowly crumples to the ground.

Back at the  bar, AJ has reached the end of his tale. His eyes are bloodshot and filled  with pain. He looks over his shoulder, thinking he might find her there, but it is only Rick, who's come to take his drunken, broken-hearted  brother home.

Review:

A  wonderful episode for the romantics among us. It's great to see AJ fall so  hard, even if it comes to nothing in the end. Janet's also cute as she flusters through telling the guys why she can't help.

The  power radiating between the brothers when they almost fall to blows is  amazing to watch. A difficult emotional scene that both actors pull off  excellently. Rick's love for his brother is obvious - he can't hit AJ, but  he can't abandon him.

He's also adorable the next morning as he tries to be offhanded about what had  happened. Things weren't right yet between them, but Rick let AJ know he was still there to help his baby brother.

One  thing you have to say about Rick - he admits when he's wrong about  something serious. Once he realizes Amanda had nothing to do with the  murder, he immediately welcomes her to the family with open arms.

Though it's hard to watch AJ's pain at the end, Rick is  there, as always to nurse him through it.

Episodes like this are why I watch this series, so it gets six out of five Camaros. In fact, I had trouble deciding which of the  many, many excellent screen shots to use for this page. I finally gave up.  All of the screen shots I got from this episode are here,  though they haven't been cleaned up because life is too short. If you like  one in particular and don't have the toys to clean it up, let me know and  I'll see what I can do. Enjoy!
